THE ICONIC lookout at Queens Park is set for a $165,000 upgrade.
The lookout is a modern structure, but its design is based on the old band rotunda which once stood on this hill slope.
A carpark area will be built, the landscaping, the lookout structure and furniture will be improved, and interpretive signage and lighting will be installed under the project.
Member for Ipswich Jennifer Howard last week announced the upgrade under the State Government’s Scenic Lookout Upgrade Program with the Ipswich Lions Lookout chosen as one of the locations.
Ms Howard said she was thrilled to hear news that the beloved Ipswich Lions lookout was set for a substantial upgrade.
“As part of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to local tourism, $165,000 has been awarded to upgrade the Ipswich Lions Lookout in conjunction with the Ipswich City Council,” Ms Howard said.
“The Lions Lookout is one the iconic locations of Ipswich, giving unparalleled views of the cityscape and rural vista’s and will be a tremendous boon to the community.
“This upgrade will not only be for citizens of Ipswich either, it is also designed to give tourists and motorists the privilege to savour one of the most beautiful views in the state, and perhaps enjoy more of the tourist attractions in Queen’s Park, such as the Nature Centre, Children’s playground, numerous free barbecues or the Queen’s Park Cafe.”
Ipswich City Council’s CityWorks, Parks, Sport and Environment chairman David Morrison, was pleased to hear that the sight was receiving the upgrade as it was due for repairs and additions, including lighting and Safe City cameras.
“As the Lookout is on a local road, the ICC and the State will work together to ensure that no one will miss out on one of the premier viewing locations in the State,” Cr Morrison said.
The Upgrade to Lions Lookout was part of a larger Scenic Lookout upgrade project across the state, with $3.2 million being put forward to upgrade more than 28 scenic lookouts in 25 council areas across Queensland.
Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey announced the upgrades today saying that lookouts were being improved as a result of this much needed funding boost.
“The $3.2 million Scenic Lookout Upgrade Program was set up to help local council’s revitalise existing lookouts across Queensland,” Mr Bailey said.
“This program encourages tourists to stop and take in the marvellous scenery in our regional areas, and I’m confident these enhancements will help attract plenty of visitors, and keep them coming back.”
