Amazon opened a 43,000sq m warehouse in Sydney last year in Goodman’s Centenary Distribution Centre in Moore Park and a third warehouse in Perth in October within the Perth Airport Business Precinct.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said construction on the Brisbane facility would start immediately and begin operating by Christmas.
“There is no doubt the ‘stay-at-home economy’ has grown significantly in the past few months,” she said.
“E-commerce companies like Amazon have a key role to play in supporting that growing economy and helping facilitate Queensland businesses deliver their products to the door.”
Online sales surged by a record 16.2 per cent in April, according to the NAB Online Retail Sales Index.
The new site will be around the same size as two rugby league fields, housing more than half a million items from Amazon.com.au ranging from health, household and personal care products, to electronics, books, gardening equipment and pantry staples
Amazon Australia director of operations Craig Fuller said Brisbane was a key strategic location to meet increasing customer demand in Queensland.
“We’re pleased that this significant investment will create job opportunities to support the local economy, benefit customers, and local small- to medium-size businesses who will be able to access Amazon’s logistics capabilities to reach customers across the country,” Mr Fuller said.
E-commerce and technology companies account for 60-70 per cent of tenants in Goodman’s $50 billion portfolio.
Goodman Australia general manager Jason Little said Goodman had a long-standing working relationship with the Queensland government and Amazon.
“The [state] government is committed to supporting and encouraging increased private investment into the state that creates new jobs for Queenslanders,” he said.
